Not Stupid, 7 Causes of Learning Disorders in Children

Bad grades don't mean stupid, you know!

Children who have learning difficulties so that some grades are not satisfactory are not necessarily stupid. Sometimes parents just keep telling their children to study more diligently so that their grades will increase. Even though the child may experience learning disabilities, making it difficult for him to understand his lessons at school.

Therefore, teachers and parents should not immediately label children stupid or lazy. If there are children who seem lazy to learn or have difficulty following lessons even though other friends can, then it is necessary to find the cause. Reported from the Learning Disabilities Association of America page, there are several types of learning disorders, see the explanation below.

1. Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a reading disorder. a child who is dyslexic will have difficulty recognizing letters so that it will be difficult to spell and read. Sometimes some letters are read interchangeably, for example, the letter b reads d, the letter p reads q, and others.

Children with dyslexia also experience some difficulties, namely:

  • Do not understand the sentences that are read or heard
  • Compose sentences
  • Memorizing vocabulary
  • Difficulty writing and poor handwriting

2. Dyscalculia

Children who have difficulty in arithmetic or math may experience dyscalculia. Dyscalculia is a learning disorder that makes it difficult for a person to understand numbers and those related to mathematics.

Not only calculating difficulties, children with dyslexia also experience several problems such as:

  • Difficulty recognizing numbers
  • Difficulty understanding basic math concepts such as plus and minus

  • The child has difficulty holding a pencil or pen
  • I find it difficult to write.
  • When writing different font sizes, mixed up upper and lowercase letters, the writing is not straight on one line.

4. Hearing process disorder (auditory processing disorder)

This disorder causes a person to have difficulty understanding what he is listening to. This occurs due to impaired coordination of the ear and brain, which causes sufferers to often misunderstand information. Not only that, people with this disorder can also have difficulty determining where the sound comes from.

This disorder can cause a child to have difficulty understanding his lessons at school. What parents or teachers say is often misunderstood.

5. Language Processing Disorder

This disturbance is part of the auditory disorder. In auditory disorders, all incoming voices will experience misinterpretation, whereas in this disorder the sufferer only has difficulty in language.

There are two types of language processing disorder, namely difficulty understanding someone's speech and difficulty expressing thoughts into speech. This disorder can also make a child difficult when learning.

6. Non-verbal learning disorders

In this disorder, sufferers will experience difficulties in motor skills, visual spatial, and social skills. This disorder causes the sufferer to be less able to understand non-verbal communication such as not understanding expressions, body language, and difficulty coordinating.

7.Visual disturbances (visual motor deficit)

This visual disturbance will cause the sufferer to have difficulty understanding an information they see, difficulty in drawing or copying something. Symptoms that can occur include:

  • Difficult to recognize shapes
  • Difficulty when cutting or cutting something
  • Often holds a pencil very firmly
  • Lack of eye and hand coordination

The seven things above can cause a child to have learning difficulties. therefore, if you know or have children who have difficulty learning or have bad grades, then you should first check the cause. If you find the symptoms of the disorder above, consult an expert immediately.
