Tips for Storing Breast Milk

Breastmilk that has been expressed by you can be stored for future use. If stored in the right way, the quality of the breast milk will not decrease and can still be used.

This method of storing breast milk is very useful for mothers who have returned to work.

Storage duration of breast milk

Mothers can store breast milk in various ways, which affect breast milk resistance:

• If stored at room temperature, breast milk can be used for the next 6 hours.

• If stored in a cool box with ice cubes, breast milk can be used for the next 24 hours.

• If stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 4 degrees or cooler, breast milk can be used for the next 5 days. Store breastmilk at the end in the refrigerator, and keep it away from eggs, meat and raw foods.

• If stored in the freezer in the one door refrigerator, breast milk can be used for up to 2 weeks.

• If stored in the freezer in the two-door refrigerator, breast milk can be used for the next 3 months.

• If stored in a special freezer with a temperature below minus 18 degrees or cooler, it can be used for the next 6 months.

How to store breast milk

• Put breast milk in a container that has been sterilized. .make sure everything is clean to avoid bacterial growth in the breast milk that you will store. Do not put breast milk in plastic beverage packaging cups or Styrofoam plastic.

• Give the date and time of each container.

• Chill in the refrigerator. Store until the time limit allowed (+ 2 weeks).

• If you want to freeze, first put it in the refrigerator overnight, then put it in the freezer. Use before the maximum allowable (+ 3-6 months).

• If frozen breastmilk is thawed, transfer the breastmilk to the refrigerator the night before, then thaw it and warm it the next day. Do not refreeze breastmilk that has been transferred to the refrigerator.

Expressed Breastfeeding

• Take breast milk based on the time of expressing (first expressed which is given first).

• If breastmilk is frozen, thaw it under warm running water. To warm up, pour breastmilk in a container, place it on top of another container filled with hot water.

• Gently shake the container of breast milk first before testing the temperature of the milk. Then the test is by shedding breastmilk on the back of the hand. If it's too hot, let the heat drop.

• Do not use the oven / microwave to warm it so that important substances in breast milk are not lost.
